This is my friend Simon Ojok. He works with me in Gulu as a Project Officer for the Gulu Disabled Persons Union and the Disability Rights Fund. He has also started his own NGO, the United Blind Youth Alliance. He is visually impaired himself, as you can see from those specs, and is working hard to help people in Uganda with vision disabilities to receive equal rights.
I went to his house the other day for tea and realized that this guy has the biggest sweet tooth in the world. I watched him make his tea and I couldn’t believe the ratio of ingredients he was using. He put 1/2 tablespoon of tea leaves in his mug, and then 4 heaping tablespoons of sugar. I don’t know if the standard recipe for tea calls for this 8:1 ratio of sugar to tea, but I improvised and went with a more restrained 1:1 (which was too sweet, by the way).
I asked him “You want some tea with your sugar?”
He looked at me and said, “Yeah. It gives me energy very fast.”
Fair enough. We drank our tea and then went on our way
